Yay… The Toy Shop is turning 10 and like any proud parent, I’m as proud as punch!
It’s a big number, double figures – not quite a teenager but it feels really grown up.
It all began back in 2006, after a bad day in the office and a long drive back from Edinburgh, the idea took hold to open a toy shop. The long established ‘Kirklands’ toy shop had just retired and that seemed like a really sad thing to lose from our town.
So, with barely filled shelves and the paint still wet, we opened the doors hoping for customers…it might have been the caseloads of wine, but they came, and the fun began (getting folk to leave just wasn’t so easy!).
My hope was to create a shop with a difference, to find things that you just don’t find everywhere else, a whole lot more exciting…okay, once in a while you disappoint, some expect the big brands and the latest TV advertised lines, but to me that’s boring…and quite frankly, lazy retailing. It’s big money that puts these products in front of kids…doesn’t mean they are all great toys, they come and go like the wind!
It’s not all been plain sailing…we’ve endured the growth of the internet, a financial crash and two long years of town centre chaos. The Toy Shop wouldn’t have survived without the most amazing team with such a wealth of knowledge and experience – we’ve had trainee teachers, professional retailers, full-time mums, nursery nurses…to name but a few. I’ve learnt a lot from these guys along the way and I’m proud of their endless commitment to giving great service to our customers…I thank them all.
Without a doubt, the most enjoyable part of being the local toy shop, is getting to know the kids and their families, I love that! The kids make us laugh, they are brutally honest, but it’s just amazing watching them grow and being able to share in those small moments when a trip to The Toy Shop is just what’s needed.
See you there, Fiona x
P.S. we’ve booked the sun…fingers crossed.
